The greatest and brightest names in Philippine Cinema were acclaimed at the 37th Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) Luna Awards Night held on November 30.

The biggest winner of the night was “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” of TBA Studios, which won Best Motion Picture, Best Sound Design for Albert Michael Idioma and Alex Tomboc, and Best Musical Score for its director, screenwriter, editor, and musical scorer, Jerrold Tarog.

“The competition was tough and I admire all the films this year so, while I’m surprised, I’m also very humbled and very proud of this award,” said TBA Studios President Vincent “Ting” Nebrida. He went on to thank the team behind the second installment in the trilogy composed of “Heneral Luna,” “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral,” and the upcoming film on the late President Manuel Quezon. “Ako’y hindi po makapaniwala na sa amin itong award na ito. Pero thank you po. We very much appreciate it. And patuloy kami sa TBA Studios sa pag-appreciate ng mga biyayang ito… More power to this entire industry and let’s move forward to the next hundred years of Philippine Cinema.”

“Liway” also won three trophies: Best Editing for Chuck Gutierrez, Best Screenplay for Zig Dulay and director Kip Oebanda, and Best Actress for Glaiza de Castro. Oebanda thanked the victims of Martial Law who shared their stories, as well as his cast and crew who accepted the project despite their low talent fees. “Dahil ang pelikula hindi naman palagi about making money. It’s not always about getting commercial success. Sometimes, it’s also to make a point. In the 100th year of Philippine Cinema, what I hope is we will have more films that go back a little bit in our history and tell stories that are either forgotten or are purposely getting deleted.”

He also praised de Castro for being selfless and dedicated. “She was doing a teleserye that required her to do kickboxing on heels and do stunts. And so, dumarating siya sa set namin wala siyang tulog. Blonde ‘yung buhok niya, kukulayan namin ng isang oras. Pero despite that, naglakad siya sa putik, sa bundok. Dumating sa point by the end of ‘Liway’ na hindi na siya makabigay ng emosyon kasi ubos na ubos siya sa role. At ginamit namin ‘yun sa cut. Ganung klaseng aktres si Glaiza de Castro and she deserves this.”

Meanwhile, “Signal Rock” by Chito Roño and “Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus” by Dwein Baltazar won two trophies each. The Best Director Award went to Roño while the Best Supporting Actress trophy was bagged by Daria Ramirez of “Signal Rock.” Best Cinematography (Neil Daza) and Best Production Design (Maolen Fadul) went to “Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus.” Arjo Atayde of Erik Matti’s “Buy Bust” won Best Supporting Actor and Daniel Padilla of Cathy Garcia-Molina’s “The Hows of Us” emerged as the Best Actor.

The 37th FAP Luna Awards Night did not just pay tribute to the nominees and awardees. It also lauded Special Awardees, celebrated the ongoing Philippine Cinema Centennial, and recognized the Sine Sandaan Luminaries: Production Companies of the Philippines. The momentous event was a gathering of Philippine Cinema greats, with the attendance of the country’s Superstar, Ms. Nora Aunor. The 2019 FAP Luna Awards was made possible by the partnership of FAP and Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

Dashes of comic relief in the elegant Awards Night

The 37th FAP Luna Awards Night at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City started off with the Red Carpet Ceremonies and Cocktail Reception. The Awards Ceremony was presided by Jon Santos who brought the house down with his competent hosting and impeccable comedic timing. An example of his witty remark was addressed to international community members in the audience: “Sometimes I will speak in Tagalog noh, which I hope is okay with you. It’s not all in English. Tagalog is our local um… binocular. So, just clap when the Filipinos are clapping or you laugh when the Filipinos are laughing so you will not feel so out of… town.”

Among the guests of honor were Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Undersecretary Rowel S. Barba and Assistant Director Anthony Rivera of Department of Trade and Industry, Undersecretary Martin Diño of Department of Interior and Local Government, Hungarian Ambassador to the Philippines József Bencze, Director Lee Jincheol of Korean Cultural Center, Minister Atsushi Kuwabara of the Embassy of Japan, Counsellor and Mrs. Victor and Lidia Balashov of the Embassy of the Russian Federation, Juan Gabriel Espejo Ceballos of the Embassy of Mexico, other members of the diplomatic corps, FAP members and guilds, and members of the FDCP Board of Trustees, including Movie Workers Welfare Foundation (Mowelfund) President Boots Anson-Rodrigo, who gave the Opening Remarks.

Ramirez also caused the Maybank Theater to roar with laughter during her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress. “Oh my God, I’m so surprised! Thank you so much. Hindi ko po ine-expect ito tonight, really. Suwerte pala ang paglabas ulit ng cleavage ko in a very long, long time after 1978. Yes, in ‘Agila.’” Best Supporting Actress Nominee Nova Villa, who received the Manuel de Leon Award for Exemplary Achievement, shared, “Talagang bata pa ako, I really wanted to be an actress. Talagang nasa harap ako ng salamin, iyak ako nang iyak, nagbabasa ako ng komiks. Lahat ng role, pati sa lalaki, ako pa rin ‘yun. Gustung-gusto ko. So I think it was passion. Pero nung bandang huli, hindi na passion. Mission. Ganda noh? Kaya if this is a mission, hintayin niyo ‘yung 100 years ko.”

Fernando Poe, Jr. (FPJ) Lifetime Achievement Awardee Lily Monteverde of Regal Entertainment, Inc. also added some humor in her heartfelt speech: “In Regal’s half a century of producing movies, it has never been work for me. This has become and will always be my life. I guess I’m being honored because I lasted this long.” The Regal matriarch continued, “It was never just because of the box office. It has always been the joy of discovery. It is about finding the next-generation writers, directors, actors, and all the artists who make entertaining movies and create great films. I look around this room and realize I must have worked with almost all of you.”

Miriam Deramas, sister of the late director Wenn V. Deramas, remarked, “We didn’t expect this po. It’s been almost four years. And we are so thankful to the members of the FAP and FDCP. Thank you po ulit at pasasalamatan niya daw kayo mamayang gabi isa-isa.” Deramas and fellow late director Soxie Topacio were recipients of the posthumous Lamberto Avellana Memorial Award. Lastly, “Liway” producer Alemberg Ang made a plea that also drew cheers. “Mananawagan po ako sa mga mainstream talent agencies na sana po huwag niyo kaming masyadong pahirapan ‘pag kailangan namin ng artista niyo sa mga indie namin kasi kahit paano naman, nabibigyan namin ng recognition,” said Ang as he accompanied Oebanda to receive the Best Actress Award for de Castro.

Stellar lineup of nominees, presenters, and awardees

FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño explained the FAP Luna Awards voting process that took place this year. The FAP Luna Awards Electoral College is composed of Citers, Nominators, and Voters who went through deliberations, with FDCP as the FAP Luna Awards Secretariat and SGV & Co. Philippines as the official tabulator. All Citers, Nominators, and Voters per category are esteemed industry practitioners in their respective categories. In addition, all of the Voters this year are winners or nominees of the FAP Luna Awards or other prestigious award-giving bodies.

Because of the intensive peer voting process of the FAP Luna Awards, being nominated is already considered as an honor and recognition in showbiz circles. Best Actor Nominee Christian Bables was elated about the wins of his “Signal Rock” co-star Ramirez and director Roño. He said, “Direk, deserve na deserve mo ‘to. Sobrang tuwang-tuwa ako nakuha mo ‘to, Direk!” Best Actor Nominee Nicco Manalo was happy about the two victories of “Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus” while Best Supporting Actor Nominees Soliman Cruz (Liway) and Mon Confiado (Signal Rock) also celebrated the wins other their other films, “Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral,” respectively.

FAP and FDCP leveled up not just the credentials of its Electoral College members, but also that of its presenters who were all awardees or nominees of the FAP Luna Awards or other esteemed award-giving bodies. The presenters of the Best Director trophy elicited the most oohs, aahs, and wows: Jose Javier Reyes, Elwood Perez, and FAP Luna Awards Hall of Famer Joel Lamangan. It was also a sight to behold to have award-winning relatives as presenters for Best Actress: FAP Luna Awards Best Supporting Actress Cherie Gil and her niece, 2019 Asia Pacific Screen Awards Best Actress Max Eigenmann.

The other Philippine Cinema icons and legends who went onstage to present were Romy Vitug (FAP Luna Awards Hall of Famer and recipient of Manuel de Leon Award for Exemplary Achievement), Lee Briones-Meily, and Marissa Floirendo for Best Cinematography; Jesse Lucas and Nonong Buencamino for Best Musical Score; Manet Dayrit and Jess Navarro for Best Editing; Edgar Martin Littaua for Best Production Design; Ditoy Aguila for Best Sound; Lilit Reyes, Senedy Que, and Roy Iglesias for Best Screenplay; Yayo Aguila and Liza Lorena for Best Supporting Actress; Raymond Bagatsing, Ronnie Lazaro, and Tommy Abuel for Best Supporting Actor; and Ricky Davao and Bembol Roco for Best Actor.

Best Screenplay victor Oebanda remarked that Iglesias was his teacher, while Best Editing winner Gutierrez opened his speech by paying tribute to presenters Dayrit and Navarro: “So humbled, mga idols ko po sila. I’m hoping that for the next year, mag-shoot pa tayo ng mga angas na sine.” Meanwhile, the Lamberto Avellana Memorial Awards were bestowed by Ana Caranina Cosio, the granddaughter of National Artist Lamberto Avellana. The Manuel de Leon Award for Exemplary Achievement was given by Carlos de Leon, grandson of Manuel de Leon, while the FPJ Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by Jeffrey Sonora and Quezon City Mayor Belmonte.

The Sine Sandaan Luminaries were no less than representatives of the top Philippine production companies. Among those who received the commemorative Sine Sandaan Trophies were Nedith Nepomuceno and Maria Lopez Nepomuceno Angeles (Malayan Movies), de Leon (LVN Pictures, Inc.), Alexander Vera-Perez (Sampaguita Pictures), Roselle Monteverde (Regal Entertainment, Inc.), Ivan Cruz (Viva Entertainment, Inc.), Mico del Rosario (Star Cinema – ABS-CBN Films), and Joey Abacan (GMA Films).

Representing the independent companies were Sonora (FPJ Productions, Inc.), Carlitos Siguion-Reyna (Reyna Films), Ronnie Quizon and Sandro Quizon (RVQ Productions, Inc.), Pat Sumagui (Quantum Films), Camille Montano (APT Entertainment, Inc.), Tony Gloria and Madonna Tarrayo (Unitel Productions, Inc.), Nebrida (TBA Studios), Perci Intalan (The IdeaFirst Company), Stacey Bascon (Reality Entertainment), Rene Durian (Center Stage Productions, Inc.), Paul Soriano (Ten17P Productions), Marlon Bautista (Imus Productions), and Ruth Racela (M-ZET Productions, Inc.). The other Sine Sandaan Luminaries are Lebran Productions, Seiko Films, Inc., Premiere Productions, Inc., Lea Productions, Inc., Tagalog Ilang-Ilang Productions, OctoArts Films International, Spring Films, JE Productions, and NV Productions.

Truly a Philippine Cinema extravaganza

The celebration of the One Hundred Years of Philippine Cinema was continued at the 2019 FAP Luna Awards Night. Renowned vocal group The Company took the audience down memory lane with songs from iconic films like “Lo’ Waist Gang,” “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” “Kakabakaba Ka Ba?,” “Tukso, Layuan Mo Ako,” “Blue Jeans,” “Annie Batungbakal,” “Bagets,” “Imagine You and Me,” “Kailangan Kita,” “John en Marsha,” and the first Filipino-produced film, “Dalagang Bukid.”

Lara Maigue and Shiela Valderrama opened the show with “Sangandaan,” “Kahit Na,” “Tanging Yaman,” and “Kay Sarap ng Buhay Nu’ng Araw,” with Kristel de Catalina showcasing an aerial dance routine. Frenchie Dy and Gian Magdangal performed songs from “Sinasamba Kita,” “Bituing Walang Ningning,” “Hihintayin Kita sa Langit,” and “Sana’y Wala ng Wakas” in a tribute to FAP Luna Awards Hall of Famers George Canseco and Willy Cruz. The moves and grooves in the production numbers were courtesy of the Dance Royalties with choreography by Dan Cabrera. The traditional annual singing of “Handog” was led by singer-songwriter Ice Seguerra, who served as the director of the FAP Luna Awards Night.

During the special “Handog” number, the 13 professional guilds of FAP, through their current guild presidents and representatives, were recognized for their efforts in strengthening the Philippine film industry. These are Paolo Villaluna of Directors’ Guild of the Philippines (DGPI), William Mayo of Philippine Motion Picture Directors Association (PMPDA), Benjamin Corpuz of Screenwriters Guild of the Philippines (SGP), Carlo Maceda and Rez Cortez of Katipunan ng mga Artistang Pilipino sa Pelikula at Telebisyon (KAPPT), Aped Santos of Production Designers Guild of the Philippines (PDGP), George Toralba of Filipino Society of Cinematographers (FSC), Mar Lopez of Katipunan ng mga Direktor sa Musika ng Pilipinas (KDMP), Albert Rima of Motion Picture Audio Society of the Philippines (MPASPI), Edgardo Vinarao of United Film Editors Guild of the Philippines (UFEG), Bobby Benitez of Assistant Director and Production Managers Association for Motion Pictures, Inc. (ADPM-AMPI), Wilson Tieng of Movie Producers and Distributors Association of the Philippines (MPDAP), Malou Santos and Orlando Ilacad of the Philippine Motion Picture Producers Association (PMPPA), and Boots Anson-Rodrigo of Mowelfund.

After which, all winners and nominees were called onstage to symbolize unity in the industry. They all stayed onstage as Diño presented the final award of the night, Best Motion Picture. It was a vision of camaraderie and cooperation as all of them awaited the announcement of the winner, and collectively congratulated Nebrida of TBA Studios for the win of “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral.” This took place amidst the spectacular stage designed by Ottobots Hernandez that had multiple screens which displayed the names, photos, and videos of nominees and awardees. LED visuals and video design were done by GA Fallarme and lighting design was courtesy of John Batalla.

Diño made sure to express her utmost gratitude to all supporters and attendees of the 37th FAP Luna Awards. “This is how we envision Philippine Cinema to be—united and working together. Thank you. In the last one hundred years, we have been very resilient. We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs. Marami po tayong kinakaharap na challenges, from the different sectors, all of which are valid. FDCP is here to really work with you on how we can move forward in the next hundred years, knowing and being optimistic that the next hundred years is not just going to be another time of not knowing what the future holds for us. We want to set standards. We want to create a system. We want to create a framework by which we can all work together, regardless of network, regardless of sector, regardless of industry—indie, mainstream, arthouse, commercial—we are all one industry.” She conveyed that she is hopeful that the next hundred years of Philippine Cinema will be about inclusivity and collaboration, with the aim of Philippine Cinema being not just locally relevant, but also globally pertinent.

Eat Bulaga’s ‘Bawal Judgmental’ draws praise for its HIV/AIDS awareness episode

  • Many netizens thanked the show for bravely discussing the issue and breaking the stigma
  • The segment invited guests who were HIV-positive who shared inspiring experiences and realizations

Eat Bulaga‘s segment “Bawal Judgmental” became a top trending topic on Twitter for its episode last December 7, Saturday which tackled HIV/AIDS awareness.

The segment opened its doors to guests who have been diagnosed as HIV-positive. These persons then narrated their personal experiences and realizations upon being knowing their condition as they were being “judged” by news anchor-TV host Susan Enriquez, the contestant.

One of the noontime show’s regular hosts, Paolo Ballesteros, then burst into tears as one of the guests, Kael made his speech to Susan.

Kael said,“Sige sasama ako sa Eat Bulaga. Kasi gusto ko ipakita sa lahat na ang isang taong may HIV ay hindi less na tao. Ang isang taong may HIV ay pwedeng mamuhay nang normal katulad nyo. Hindi kami disabled. Hindi kami dapat pandirihan.

“Yes, may pagkakamali kami pero hindi enough para ituring kaming less. At kung may isang bagay akong sasabihin sa lahat, yung yakap ni Mama yun yung nagpawala ng lahat ng pagod at sakit. At the end of the day, i-discriminate ako… I know pag-uwi ko sa bahay meron akong nanay na nagmamahal sa akin,” Kael said while crying.

The other guest named Basha then said,“ Yung acceptance yung pinaka importante dun. Kung natanggap mo sa sarili mo, tulungan mo ang sarili mo kasi hindi ka naman mamamatay dahil sa HIV.”

“For everybody na lang, yun nga, yung segment Bawal Judgmental. So ang mga taong merong HIV is pwede pa ring magkaroon ng relationship and pwede pa ring magkaroon ng pamilya… at maging masaya,” Mae stated.

Meanwhile, Dr. Stanley Carrascal from Infectious Disease Prevention and Control ng Department of Health was also invited to the show. He then made clarifications to common misconceptions about HIV.

“Once diagnosed ang isang tao with HIV, ang ating treatment will be lifetime. Pag nag-start na sila nang gamutan, ang HIV hindi na parang taning na 10 years ka na lang mabubuhay.

“Those people living with HIV that maintain treatment, ang lifespan nila pareho lang sa mga taong walang HIV… They really have to maintain on Antiretroviral Therapy,” the doctor shared.

This episode stirred the emotions of thousands of viewers in the studio and on social media. Many netizens showered Eat Bulaga with praises for featuring an informative and meaningful topic.

December is HIV/AIDS awareness month. According to Mary Joy Morin, Technical Officer of the Department of Health (DOH), in her speech this July, the Philippines has the “highest in HIV increase rate in the Asia Pacific region” adding that 140 percent increase of HIV cases has been recorded by the DOH over the past 10 years.

Philippines’ Top 10 streaks ends with Miss Universe 2019 pageant

$

  • The Philippines’ Top 10 streak in the Miss Universe pageant finally came to an end
  • This record first started with Venus Raj and ended with Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray
  • This year’s representative for Miss Universe pageant Gazini Ganados failed to advance to the Top 10

For straight nine years, Filipina beauty queens have managed to take a spot in the Top 10 finalists in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant held every year. A record was solely achieved by the Philippines.

The almost decade-long trend started with Maria Venus Raj, a Filipino-Indian who placed as the fourth runner-up in 59th Miss Universe pageant in 2010 wherein she  popularized her fumbled answer “Major Major“.

Scottish-Filipino, Australia-raised model Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray conquered the stage as she won the Miss Universe 2018 title, making herself the fourth Filipina to do so. She was then the last candidate who successfully continued the Top 10 streak of the country.

Here is a list of Filipina candidates who competed in the Miss Universe competition from the year 2010 to 2019, and their final standings in the pageant:

• 2010: Maria Venus Raj, 4th runner-up
• 2011: Shamcey Supsup, 3rd runner-up
• 2012: Janine Tugonon, 1st runner-up

•2013: Ara Arida, 3rd runner-up

•2014: Mary Jean Lastimosa, Top 10
•2015: Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2015 winner
•2016: Maxine Medina, Top 6
•  2017: Rachel Peters, Top 10
• 2018: Catriona Elisa Gray, Miss Universe 2018 Winner
• 2019: Gazini Ganados, Top 20 and Best in National Costume

” It started with a Bicolana and (unfortunately) ended with a Bicolana,” a netizen commented noting that Raj and Gray were both raised in Bicol region.

Sadly, the Top 10 streak of the Philippines came to an end this year.

Gazini Christiana Jordi Acopiado Ganado landed in the Top 20 in the recently held Miss Universe 2019 pageant held at Tyler Perry Studios, Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Despite gaining much support from Filipino fans, Gazini failed to make it to the Top 10.

Many fans still expressed their appreciation to Gazini for giving her best in the competition. Filipinos became more high spirited when it was later announced that Gazini actually won the Best in National Costume Award instead of Miss Malaysia Shweta Sekhon.

Through Twitter, the Miss Universe Organization corrected this announcement hours after the pageant ended saying that Steve Harvey, the host, had read the teleprompter correctly when he named Miss Philippines as the winner.

Vice Ganda no comment on viral ‘stop’ joke about Apollo Quiboloy

Kapamilya host and comedian Vice Ganda on Monday refused to give a comment on a media query regarding Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

During the press conference for his 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival entry The Mall, The Merrier in Quezon City, Vice was asked by a member of the press what he would do if Quiboloy asked his real-life partner Ion Perez to join in mall shows.

“I love you, but sorry, I’d rather not comment on that para mas masaya ang Pasko natin, di ba? Again, I love you, but I’d rather not comment. Gusto niyo ba may nag-aaway ‘pag Pasko?” Vice replied.

“I’d rather not comment. Di ba? Magtulungan tayo to spread good vibes,” he added.

The veteran columnist who asked the question, then said she only wanted the Unkabogable star to tell Quiboloy to “stop.”

“Ang gusto ko lang sabihin mo sa kanya, ‘Stop!'” the columnist said.

Vice then answered: “Eh bat hindi ikaw magsabi niyan sa kanya? May kakayahan ka, may panulat ka di ba?”

Quiboloy is the founder and leader of the religious group, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name, Inc.

He earlier claimed that he stopped one of the deadly quakes in Mindanao because he said so.

The pastor said people should be thankful to him.

“Sabi ko, ‘Lindol, huminto ka.’ Huminto,” he said in the October 30 episode of Give Us This Day, a weekly TV show produced by the pastor’s religious group.

“Pasalamat kayo sa akin kasi kung hindi ko pina-stop ‘yun, marami kayong magigiba diyan, mamamatay kayo,” he added.

Quiboloy later became a subject of jokes and memes online.

Even Vice made him the subject of jokes on It’s Showtime last November 5.

Doing his usual banter with co-host Jhong Hilario during the “Tawag ng Tanghalan” segment, Vice quipped that the pastor would probably be the greatest enemy of “Dalisay” portrayed by Coco Martin on the top-rating ABS-CBN TV series, FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.

“Alam mo kung sino ang magiging pinakamatinding kalaban ni Cardo? Naku, kabahan na si Cardo… Feeling ko si Quiboloy, ‘yung nagpahinto ng lindol,” the comedian said, drawing laughter from the audience.

“Si Quiboloy lang ang magpapahinto ng ‘Probinsyano.’ Abangan niyo ‘yan,” he added.

Vice went on to challenge the pastor to put an end to “Ang Probinsyano” and to the monstrous traffic on EDSA.

“Hinahamon kita, Quiboloy. Ipahinto mo na ‘Ang Probinsyano.’ Napahinto mo pala ang lindol eh. Napakayabang niyo pala eh,” he said.

“Sabi niya raw, stop. Sige nga, punta ka ng gitna ng EDSA, stop mo ‘yung traffic doon,” he added.

Vice earned the ire of radio broadcaster Mike Abe who slammed him for his remarks against the pastor.

Quiboloy, on the other hand, answered the comedian’s dare with sarcasm.

In his “Spotlight” program on SMNI, the pastor said EDSA traffic could not be stopped because it’s already not moving.

He instead lectured the comedian that he should have said to make the traffic flow again.

“Ipa-stop ko daw ang traffic sa EDSA eh mag-isip ka muna bago ka magsalita. Paano kung nai-stop ang naka-stop na. Hindi na kumikilos,” said Quiboloy.

“Siguro ang dapat mong sinabi, flow of traffic, make it faster. Tuloy, traffic. Tuloy-tuloy wag hihinto,” he added.

As for the Ang Probinsyano dare, the pastor asked Vice how many months he wanted it to end and maybe the network won’t be operating also because of its pending franchise renewal woes.

“Kailan mo ba gusto mapa-stop ang ‘Probinsyano‘? Isang buwan, dalawang buwan, tatlong buwan, apat na buwan?” Quiboloy said.

“Ikaw pili ka? Baka sa apat na buwan hindi lang ‘yung ‘Probinsiyano‘ ang ma-stop. Baka pati yung network mo stop na ‘yan,” he added.

Quiboloy has maintained close ties with President Rodrigo Duterte, who has repeatedly launched verbal attacks against ABS-CBN due to what Duterte claimed was allegedly slanted reporting.

Duterte has been issuing threats not to renew the franchise of ABS-CBN since 2017 following accusations that the network did not air his political advertisements during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The ABS-CBN’s franchise is set to expire in 2020.

The Philippine entertainment industry has lost another actor.

Miko Palanca, who was well known for his roles in various TV series such as Tabing Ilog, Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay, and It Might Be You, has passed away.

Miko, the younger brother of actor Bernard Palanca, was 41 years old.

Citing the statement of the actor’s manager June Rufino, TV host Boy Abunda on Monday confirmed the sad news on his late-night talk show Tonight With Boy Abunda.

Boy also extended his condolences to the actor’s family.

“Mga kapamilya kami’y taos pusong nakikiramay po sa pamilya Revilla sa pagpanaw ni Miko Palanca,” the host said.

“Itong balitang ito ay nanggaling po sa kanyang manager, ang aking kaibigang June Rufino. Let’s continue to pray for the soul of Miko Palanca,” he added.

On Tuesday, Miko’s family also confirmed the news of the actor’s death.

“We are extremely saddened by the sudden passing of our beloved brother, Miko Palanca. The whole family is grateful for the incredible outpour of love and support that has been coming in today,” the family said in a statement.

“As of now, we would like to respectfully request for privacy as we go through this very difficult time. Again, we appreciate all the love and support – thank you so much,” they added.

The statement was issued by his mom Pita along with brother Bernard and his siblings.

However, they did not mention the cause of Miko’s death.

Initial reports said the actor allegedly committed suicide by jumping to his death from a mall in San Juan City.

Based on a police blotter, the incident happened on Sunday.

Although it was reported to be a suicide, no further details were given about the actor’s death.

Police said they are still investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) has also expressed condolences to Miko’s family.

“The Film Academy Of The Philippines extends our sincerest sympathies to the family of Miko Palanca for his untimely passing,” the FAP posted on its Facebook page.

Miko comes from a family of artists.

His maternal grandfather, Armando Goyena, was also an actor and matinee idol during the 1950s.

Miko is also the grandson of businessman and philanthropist Carlos Palanca, Jr. of the prestigious Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.

Kapamilya actor Tony Labrusca on Monday said he was pleasantly surprised to be enjoying a comedy role.

During the press conference for The Mall, The Merrier in Quezon City, the former Glorious star admitted that he enjoyed doing the said comedy-fantasy film about rival sisters claiming ownership of a mall.

Tony said The Mall, The Merrier is his first comedy movie.

“Yes, this is my first comedy film. Well, you’ll see naman sa movie na hindi naman kailangan na komedyante ako,” the actor said in an exclusive interview with LionhearTV.

“Pero it was really fun kasi mas light and usually naman nasa drama ako. So it was fun. It was a good experience,” he added.

When asked if he is willing to do another comedy film in the near future, the 24-year old actor said, “Puwede.”

Tony is known for his role as Niko, a young lover to actress Angel Aquino in the 2018 romantic-drama movie Glorious.

His first break was playing the role of Jake Arguelles in 2017 horror-fantasy drama TV series, La Luna Sangre.

In The Mall, The Merrier film, Tony will play as Gardo, the partner of Vice Ganda’s character, Moira.

The movie is Vice’s seventh Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry since 2012.

Vice Ganda gets offended for call out culture towards comedy genre in MMFF

During the presscon for the upcoming Metro Manila Film Fest The Mall, The Merrier, Vice Ganda expressed his dismay towards the people who criticize the comedy genre during the annual film festival.

According to the Unkabogable Star, people need to watch something light especially during Christmas day, and it is never right to question the value of the comedy genre.

He stated, “Kailangan i-call out din natin na mali ho yung mababang tingin niyo sa comedy, na kinukuwestiyon ninyo ang kahalagahan ng comedy sa pelikula at sa buhay in general. Since call out culture nga, i-call out natin sila at dapat siguro sa tulong ninyo, maaring ipaliwanag ninyo sa kanila kung bakit mahalaga at legit ang comedy, especially sa Pasko, lalo na sa Pilipinas.”

Despite the criticisms of the comedy genre during the Metro Manila Film Festival, Vice firmly believes that our country needs comediennes, as it helps fellow Filipinos to somehow uplift themselves in the midst of life challenges.

“Kailangan ng Pilipinas ng comedy, at kailangan ng Pilipinas ang komedyante. Sabi ko nga, sana walang mamatay na komedyante sa Pilipinas, kasi nakakalungkot kapag nabawasan ng komedyante ang Pilipinas, comedy is very important.”

When asked about his forecast about the gross income of his MMFF entry, Vice wished it could earn 1 billion. He also emphasized that there’s nothing wrong with claiming positive things.

He said, “Forecast nga, e di mag-claim tayo ng mag claim, 1 billion ganun, 2 billion kung kaya, malay mo ibigay e di claim natin. Wala naman masama sa pag claim ng maganda at positive, maging ambisosya wala rin naman masama, wala naman bayad ‘yon.”

  • Basketball player Ricci Rivero shared how he struggled with depression in the past
  • He was previously accused of drug abuse while he was still part of De La Salle’s Green Archers
  • His story is currently featured in the sports documentary series titled Dayories

University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) superstar Ricci Rivero of UP Fighting Maroons recently shared in an interview how he struggled with depression which he experienced after he was accused of illegal use of drugs. Rivero along with Ange Koame of Ateneo Blue Eagles, and Rhenz Abando of UST Growling Tigers are currently featured in the sports documentary series titled Dayories streaming on iWant.

The popular basketball player recalled that it was a tough time for him being involved in drug abuse allegations when he was still part of the Green Archers team of De La Salle.

“Kasi nga, siguro po do’n sa story ko nga I’ve been through so much like yung sa… and siguro nga naging comfortable lang ako with La Salle—high school until college—kaya depressing yung nangyari, na nawala ako sa La Salle.

“And then, feeling ko talaga that time do’n na ako mag ga-graduate, and all that, na I will finish my college there and I will play for them for the rest of my UAAP career. For me kasi yung UAAP are the best days of a basketball player talaga so sobrang thankful ako for that.”

He continued, “But then yon nga, because of some problems I have to transfer, and siguro yung problems na yon parang nag-boom talaga siya and parang most of the people around me talaga are talking about it and some are judging me and all that. But then I have to siguro take it in a positive way lang kasi it’s going to be hard nga for me to take it in a problematic way,” Rivero explained.

He then said that he was thankful to the Kapamilya network for sharing his story with others.

“Sobrang thankful ako sa ABS-CBN for giving me this opportunity to express my story. And siguro just like normal people, same lang naman po tayo lahat, nagkaka-problem, nagkakamali, may mga nagagawa hindi tama. But then siguro, you have to accept the fact lang na no matter how happy or how famous or rich you are hindi mawawala ang problema. What’s important is kung paano mo ito iha-handle at haharapin.”

Though it might be a hurtful past for him, Rivero said that he has now moved on from it.

“For me, tapos na po yon,eh. Napagdaanan ko na lahat. Yung mga biro, siyempre napagdaanan ko na rin yon especially with those people na close ko talaga, pero hindi talaga namin siya ginawang parang biro before. Nung tapos na talaga yung lahat ng isyu at naka-move-on na rin kami, wala, parang… yeah, napagdaanan namin siya pero it’s not something that we have to dwell on na,” he shared.

He also shared how he reacted to his bashers online. “I don’t take it in a negative way, na iisipin ko siya as a problem. Binabasa ko talaga yung iba, yung mga iba kasi may point din naman sila. May times din talaga na mali rin ako so siyempre, I have to do something na how do I fix myself kasi nagkakamali po tayong lahat.

“Yung iba naman hinahayaan ko na lang kasi parang wala lang siguro silang magawa, so kung magagalit ako pareho lang kaming magiging masama,” Rivero stated.

Ricci Paolo Uy Rivero formerly played for the De La Salle Green Archers in his first two years in collegiate basketball after he left in April 2018.

His breakout performance in the UAAP Season 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament earned him a spot in the Mythical Five and the Most Improved Player award. He is also an actor who first featured in the MMFF film Otlum.

GMA Network Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Communications Angela Javier Cruz represented the Philippines as one of the jurors at the Southeast Asia Video Festival for Children (SEAVFC) last November 27 to 30 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

SEAVFC is an annual video competition that celebrates the best in children’s television across the region. Cruz joined an expert panel of media professionals from 10 countries–Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Other jurors from the Philippines include ABS-CBN Vice President and Head of Integrated Corporate Communications Kane Errol Choa and veteran broadcast journalist Jiggy Manicad.

As a juror, she reviewed videos created for and by the children. The entries mirror the youth’s aspirations and desires as well as pride in family and traditions.

“Representing the country and GMA Network as a juror in this festival strengthens national pride during this time when we truly need to have more of it. The sharing and exchange of ideas among the participating countries further enriched everyone’s knowledge of the Southeast Asians’ diverse yet comparable cultures. I thank Anak TV for this opportunity to serve the organization and to support its vision of ensuring child-sensitive and age-appropriate video programs in the Philippines and beyond,” Cruz said.

Aside from being represented in the Southeast Asia jury, GMA Network also won the Heart Award (Professional Category) for its television series ‘Sahaya’. The series  was top-billed by young actress Bianca Umali and showcased the richness of Philippine indigenous culture from the eyes of the Badjao people. The Philippines bagged four awards in the international film festival.

SEAVFC was inspired by the 2016 Prix Jeunesse International held in Munich, Germany. This festival is known for advocating excellence in children’s television around the world. Since its establishment in Germany in 1964, it has been promoting, celebrating and honoring the highest quality in youth and children’s television.

Seeing the limited representation of Southeast Asia in the festival and recognizing that the region has a vast young population which will benefit greatly from such a project, Anak TV Inc., through its president Elvira Yap-Go, proposed the first Southeast Asia Prix Jeunesse.

The Philippines hosted the first two editions of SEAVFC.

Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez shares her three best-kept secrets for modern parents!

Asia’s Songbird, Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, may have so many awards and recognitions to her name, but that doesn’t spare her from the challenges that ordinary parents face.

As a first-time mom, Regine’s toughest challenge is something that many mothers can relate to – balancing work and taking care of the family.

“The toughest challenge I faced as a first-time mom is being able to balance my time between my work and taking care of Nate. I literally had to reduce my workload so I could give my full attention to our child and in keeping our household intact in terms of day to day errands, doing chores, laundry, and more! I’m sure most parents would relate to this” she shares.

By far, it’s been a learning journey for Regine, who was recently named as Ariel Philippines’ brand ambassadress, but the challenges have enriched her life both as a mother and as a professional. She discovered that parenting is one of life’s greatest joys, providing wonderful moments to be savored.

Regine shares three insights for other moms who know the joys and challenges of having a career while raising a family at the same time.

Learning through experience

For Regine, nothing can make you more knowledgeable about parenting than being there for your child. “Reading books and listening to the advice of mothers are important but learning through experience would be best too. Listening to your child as he/she grows develops that intimacy that you can nurture,” she says.

Regine even shared a personal experience she encountered, “In my case, Nate loves to play outdoors. Sometimes he comes back inside the house full of sweat and dirt. I used to find this as a challenge, but I learned the hard way not to stop him and just let him experience the joys of childhood. That’s why I’m happy to have Ariel as my partner in this. Bye amoy pawis at kahit anong dumi!”

Inject fun and excitement into daily activities

Laughter makes everything light, so find ways to bring in some fun moments into routine activities so that these could become opportunities for bonding. Even daily chores like doing the laundry can have fun components that involve all family members. “I remember this one time where I wanted Nate to learn about the importance of doing household chores at an early age, so I started creating games out of doing the laundry! It came to a point that if I tell him it’s time for laundry, he automatically runs to pick up our laundry detergent — Ariel, of course!”

Find smart solutions for everyday problems

Let’s face it, everyday problems can bog us down. The best way to deal with these is to go for smart solutions specific to your concerns.

For instance, Regine finds stinky and dirty clothes a real dampener, not only for herself, but most especially for little Nate. For clothes that reek of malodor or kulob, she turns to Ariel. With its innovative and superior cleaning power, Ariel effectively fights off tough stains and malodor on clothes in just one wash.

“Out of all household chores, doing the laundry used to be the most time-consuming, especially with multiple washes whenever there were tough stains. With so much time spent on chores, I had less hours in the day with Nate. But now with Ariel, I am confident that my family’s clothes will be clean and fresh with minimal effort, so I can spend more quality time with my boys.”

As a powerhouse mom, Regine turns to Ariel, a powerhouse brand, to ensure that she can be the best that she can be – whether at home or at work.

HOUSTON, TX, December 12, 2019 – Leading Filipino media and entertainment company ABS-CBN has filed a complaint in U.S. Federal Court in the Southern District of Texas against Anthony Brown and 1700 Cuts Technology seeking damages in excess of $4 million for allegedly pirating ABS-CBN’s content and trademark infringement.

The lawsuit alleges that Texas local resident Brown promoted and sold modified illegal set-top boxes via various Facebook.com pages operated by Brown and 1700 Cuts Technology that enabled buyers to access ABS-CBN’s live programming without paying the appropriate fees for such services. The Facebook pages used to promote the illegal set-top boxes included two personal profile pages and a business page for “Lifeforgreatness”.

“Beware of these operations that are not licensed or affiliated in any way with ABS-CBN,” warned ABS-CBN AVP & Head of Global Anti-Piracy Elisha Lawrence. “We will continue to protect customers by shutting these operations down. The only genuine ABS-CBN internet subscription services are TFC on cable and satellite, IPTV and TFC.tv.”

“We remain steadfast in protecting the content from ABS-CBN’s team of hardworking creative and technical people who need to be rightfully acknowledged and compensated for their work,” said ABS-CBN Managing Director for North and Latin America Jun Del Rosario.

Del Rosario did not mince words about the pirates. “What these pirates do is literally rob from this ecosystem of content creators, pretend to own the content, and scam customers by making money off that content. ABS-CBN is committed to stopping them and bringing them to justice,” he added.

ABS-CBN is represented by Steven Abbott and Stephen M. Gaffigan and Christine Daley of Stephen M. Gaffigan, P.A.

Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature’s most enduring characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals in Universal Pictures’ new epic adventure Dolittle.

After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company.

But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk’s Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar-winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar-winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle’s most trusted advisor and confidante.

Big Men on Campus: The Guys of ‘Black Christmas’

$

The women are fiercely empowering in Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s new horror thriller Black Christmas, but on the flipside, an insidious toxic masculinity persists in the story’s fraternity Delta Kappa Omega (DKO).

“DKO represents old-school masculinity and the old-school ideas of what men should be and what women should be,” director Sophia Takal says. “The men of the fraternity are preppy, conservative and have grown up thinking that the world belongs to them. They don’t experience consequences for any of their actions and they’ll always continue to get more powerful, despite how they have acted in the past.”

Just in time for the holidays, Black Christmas is a timely take on a cult horror classic as a campus killer comes to face a formidable group of friends in sisterhood. The male characters in the film may not all be bad boys, and as you will find out below, a couple of them may even have redeeming qualities.

Professor Gelson (Cary Elwes, Saw, Netflix’s Stranger Things)

Professor Gelson, a long-standing professor of classics at Hawthorne College, is played by Cary Elwes, who is known for the iconic roles of Westley in The Princess Bride and Dr. Lawrence Gordon in the Saw films. Professor Gelson and his father are both alumni of the University, and, in many ways, the school is his life. “Professor Gelson is a charming, popular professor on campus,” director Sophia Takal says. “He was part of the DKO fraternity when he went to Hawthorne, but the current women of MKE have an issue with the fact that he only teaches the white male canon and doesn’t include any diverse voices in his class.”

Elwes goes into further detail about the character. “Professor Gelson teaches classic literature with a slight bias towards suggesting that the glory of male civilization is far more important than anything else,” Elwes says.” What’s ironic is that one usually associates prejudiced people with ignorance. Yet, here is a guy who is supposedly an intellectual who is clearly proud of his prejudice. I was drawn to that character because I had never played someone quite like him before.”

Landon (Caleb Eberhardt, The Post, Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle)

Landon is a sweet, caring student who introduces himself to Riley (Imogen Poots) early in the film, after having been attracted to her for some time. He’s a genuine, dad-joke telling, social-media-free guy, but Riley is wary of him because of her past experiences with men. Landon senses Riley’s guardedness, but doesn’t quite know where it’s coming from or what to do about it.

“Landon represents a new type of masculinity and his character is crucial in showing that there are men out there who want to help women,” Takal says. “He understands women and is open to a more egalitarian society. Landon captures the charm and goofiness of what it is to be a young man trying to navigate relationships in 2019.”

Nate (Simon Mead, Same But Different: A True New Zealand Love Story)

Nate is Marty’s thoughtful, attentive boyfriend. Nate is very kind to Marty and her friends, but almost to a fault. Marty can be a bit curt with him, but he doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, he seems pretty content to be the beta to Marty’s alpha. “Nate doesn’t fit in with your typical frat boy and finds himself more at ease around Marty’s friends and their opinions and values,” Mead says. “He’s your all-around, trusting, friendly guy. A lot of the roles I’ve had in the past have been playing the jerk, so it was nice to show a different side in this role.”
