Glaiza De Castro, Jasmine Curtis-Smith talk about their upcoming movie, recall martial law stories

In the media conference for their upcoming movie, actresses Glaiza De Castro and Jasmine Curtis-Smith shared their thoughts on Midnight in A Perfect World.

Glaiza said that she initially skimmed the Martial-Law reference in the story when she got the script. Glaiza then recalled one of her lines in the theatrical trailers of the film.

“Nung binasa ko yung script, di ko naman sya nakitang, parang yung pinaka element n’ya agad ay martial law. Siguro very ano lang, parang passive kasi dahil binanggit ko yung, binanggit ko sa line yun, na beta version s’ya ng martial law,” said Glaiza.

Then, Glaiza said that she recalled the stories she heard from the Martial Law period when they started filming.

“Until nung ginawa nanamin yung pelikula, syempre di ko naman na-experience yung martial law, kakapanganak pa lang nun sa akin. Pero while, we were doing it kung ano yung mga narinig ko before, stories about it, ayun yung parang na-experience ko sa pelikula,” said Glaiza.

As for Jasmine, she said that the scenes in the movie challenged her physically. She noted that scenes involved a lot of running.

“I’ll say it was more physically challenging. Ang dami naming takbo eh,” said Jasmine.

Additionally, Jasmine also considers the film a good exercise for her acting, but overall she had fun making Midnight in A Perfect World.

“It was a good, parang exercise for all of us. But it was also the physical movement and the awareness of everyone’s blocking, not just ours. That was fun. That was really fun,” said Jasmine.

Jasmine and Glaiza, alongside Anthony Falcon and Dino Pastrano, star in the horror film, Midnight in A Perfect World. Set in a utopian world wherein people mysteriously disappear during random blackouts at midnight, four friends must find a safe house to survive the night.

The cast also includes Bing Pimentel, Soliman Cruz, Dolly de Leon, Charles Aaron Salazar, and Brian Sy. Director Dodo Dayao, the brain behind Cinema One’s Violator, wrote and directed the film. It had a limited screening back in 2020 at QCinema International Film Festival, but ended up as the festival’s highest-grossing film.

The film, produced by Globe Studios and Epicmedia Productions, streams on UPSTREAM.ph starting January 29, 2021, and will be available for a month.

The numbers are in: SZA’s “Good Days” is officially her biggest hit to date in the Philippines and elsewhere in the world. In the country alone, the soulful single remains unstoppable with its No. 2 peak at Spotify Philippines Viral 50 and a top 15 placement at Spotify Philippines Top 50.

Over at mainstream radio, the critically acclaimed R&B songstress is performing well on several top 40 stations. This week, “Good Days” ranks No. 5 on 99.5 PlayFM, a major pop station; No. 7 on Wave 89.1 FM, a rhythmic and urban-leaning station; and has gained prominent spots on Magic 89.9 (No. 23), and more.

“Good Days,” the second track following 2020’s “Hit Different,” is one of her two new headline releases since 2017’s groundbreaking multi-platinum debut, CTRL—an album that garnered significant critical attention for “laying bare the kind of vulnerability most often whispered in private” and for its “believable insights into one woman’s quest for erotic self-determination.”

Written and produced by SZA, Jacob Collier, Carlos Muñoz, Carter Lang, and Christopher Ruelas and mixed by Shawn Everett, the laid-back tune was released as a surprise drop on Christmas eve last year. More than a week after its debut, the buzzy empowerment anthem skyrocketed at No. 1 on US Spotify Streaming Chart, and has since peaked within the top 10 of other major music markets including the US, UK, Australia, Ireland, Belgium, and New Zealand.

To date, the track has racked up more than 75 million streams on Spotify and more than 20 million cumulative hits on YouTube in just a month.

Aside from its commercial triumph, “Good Days” also made an indelible impression among music critics. Hip-hop magazine, The Source praised the new song for “mastering bliss and serenity all at once.” The publication adds, “In particular, the rawness of her vocals creates an ethereal energy that dives deeper into SZA`s unmatched creativity as a songwriter.” British music bible, NME called her comeback single “worth the wait,” citing how her voice has grown more sophisticated and carefree through the years.

SZA’s “Good Days” is now available on all streaming platforms worldwide via Top Dawg, RCA, and Sony Music.

House Legislative Franchise chair believes ABS-CBN franchise bill is best to be discussed in the next Congress

House Committee on Legislative Franchises Chairman Franz Alvarez said it will be best for another ABS-CBN franchise application to be discussed in the next congress.

In a statement Thursday, January 28, Alvarez said he believed the House leadership has already made a consensus to take up the ABS-CBN franchise bill in 2022.

“Based on my understanding from the House leadership, the ABS-CBN franchise issue is best left to the next Congress,” he said.

At the start of this year, several lawmakers have made fresh moves to revive discussions on the ABS-CBN franchise as Senate President Tito Sotto, Lipa Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto, and Camarines Sur Rep. Gabriel Bordado files their respective franchise bills.

“The ABS-CBN franchise issue was put to rest when the committee, voting 70-11, rejected the network’s franchise application on July 10, 2020.

“Under the rules, any one of the 70 House members who voted against the franchise application could file a motion for reconsideration on behalf of ABS-CBN to challenge the decision of the committee. Unfortunately, there was none, thus the committee decision has become final,” Alvarez added.

President Duterte however also renewed his tirade and opposition against the network’s renewal citing long-settled issue about tax payments and government loans.

“For all I care, you can have a thousand franchises. You will not see the light until you come to government with clean hands,” he said.

Meanwhile, Alvarez’s statement also came after Anakalusugan Partylist Rep. Mike Defensor who is one of the main oppositors during the recent ABS-CBN franchise hearing asked for a plenary vote on the aborted bill seeking to give ABS-CBN interim franchise.

Defensor however failed to note that the interim bill has been moot and academic since it only seeks to grant the Kapamilya network provisional franchise until October 2020 which in effect has already lapsed.

ABS-CBN has been shut down since May 5, 2020, following the expiration of its franchise and the cease and desist order from the National Telecommunications Commission. Its franchise application meanwhile was subsequently denied by 70 Cayetano-led Congressmen on July 10 even though several government agencies have cleared ABS-CBN of any gross constitutional violation as alleged by those opposed to the franchise.

January 2021 – Singapore – Today, Chicago indie punk artist, Sincere Engineer, have shared their new single and music video for “Tourniquet”.

The song captures the eternal struggle of piercing the line of apathy and motivation with the soaring moment where melancholy bursts into hopeful optimism. Fans can check out the new single and music video here: smarturl.it/tourniquetvideo

On the music video, which features animation by Nolan J. Downs, a high school friend of singer Deanna Belos, Deanna shares, “Nolan and I went to high school together! I’ve been following him for a bit and always wanted to work with him on an animation video one day. So it felt right to do it now, since getting together physically to make music videos isn’t ideal right now anyway.” The DIY video also perfectly captured the tone of the song by using surreal elements to tell a story that isn’t always able to be told in words.

“Tourniquet” is the follow-up to last year’s debut Hopeless single, “Trust Me” – a guttural anthem about self-sabotage. Landing on The Alternative’s Most Anticipated Albums in 2021, Sincere Engineer continues to be lauded and have cemented their place as one of punk’s most ambitious and honest bands.

This Saturday (January 30), witness a different side of Kapuso actor Richard Yap as he tries his hand at comedy in the all-new episode of the award-winning sitcom ‘Pepito Manaloto.’

Richard has previously revealed that he is eager to work with multi-talented comedian Michael V. during his transfer to GMA Network last December 2020.

In an interview with 24 Oras, Richard shares that he and Michael V. have actually known each other prior to his guesting on Pepito Manaloto. For this very reason, Richard adds that he is beyond delighted to have been invited to grace the well-loved Kapuso sitcom albeit not being in the same scene with Michael V.

“Sa taping ng Pepito Manaloto, hindi kami magka-eksena. Sayang na hindi kami nagkita but hopefully, I will be able to guest in his other shows and magsama na kami sa isang scene,” he said.

Richard also admits that, contrary to his usual stoic roles, he is a joker himself off-camera, “What people don’t know about me ay medyo ‘kenkoy’ naman ako in real life, hindi ako ganoon kaseryoso. For me, it was really fun doing comedy. Sometimes it’s also hard to be doing drama all the time.”

The episode features Richard as Mr. Zacarias, a hotel manager who seems to be having trouble keeping his hands to himself. Deedee (Jessa Zaragoza), who has a new gig at the hotel, is bothered by this and gets Berta (Jen Rosendahl) as her bodyguard. Will Deedee’s plan help Mr. Zacarias off her case?

Get a high dosage of laughter with the all-new episode of “Pepito Manaloto, Kuwento, Kuwento” this Saturday (January 30), 7PM, on GMA-7.

Viewers abroad can also watch via GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. For the program guide, visit www.gmapinoytv.com.

Rosie Darling follows viral track with Indie Pop Gem ‘Heavy’

January 2021 – Singapore – Late last year, a fresh-eyed L.A. transport from just outside of Boston, Rosie Darling entered the indie-pop scene with her debut single “Coping”. With her first artist statement, Rosie has amassed nearly 5 million streams across all platforms since the track’s release, charting on 14 different Spotify Viral 50 charts, landing Top 20 on the Global Viral Chart. Out today, Rosie shares her follow-up single, “Heavy”.

If “Coping” is what introduced Rosie’s uncanny lyricism, then “Heavy” is where it blossoms. In rapid-fire, she starts off the song with “I don’t know how to put things on ice, I’ve got a headache, I talk in my sleep, and say what I mean but I can’t seem to say it when anyone’s listening.” The high energy, almost slam poetry singing mirrors the chaotic nature of a past relationship. Rosie says, “I picture thoughts going in all different directions. I wanted that because that plays into a visual of anxiety.” But as the chorus nears, a more somber tone appears, with the lyrics, “if it’s heavy for you then it’s heavier for me.” Even as punchier percussion highlights Rosie’s words, there is a softness that floats above everything else.

Intense emotional growth is often the best fuel for a musician’s creative fire, and Rosie has certainly turned pain into beauty. Like many artists, Rosie grew up in a creative and bustling household. Around the age of twelve, her dad taught her a few chords on the guitar, and those lessons, coupled with the rise of mega singer-songwriters like Taylor Swift, propelled Rosie into her own storytelling. At fourteen, she got into the studio and found that the recording process came naturally to her. In her words, the studio is her safe place. After casually writing and performing throughout high school and college, Rosie decided to pursue music more seriously, toplining on some tracks and connecting with producers. In 2017, Rosie and producer OKO released “L.A.”, and at about three million streams on Spotify, the track has done well considering the pair released it entirely on their own. Later in 2019, Rosie wrote “Never Be The Same” for EDM duo Tritonal, and the track hit number one on SiriusXM’s BPM radio.

After moving to Los Angeles from the East Coast, Rosie took on the daunting task of networking in a city that is notoriously spread out and filled to the brim with other artists on the rise. After only two years in LA, Rosie has built a strong network of producers and songwriters, crediting her success to her focus and determination, along with a bit of risk-taking. But fully pursuing a passion can come with a price, and Rosie has poured all the loss and love of the past couple of years into a forthcoming debut EP (details TBA).

“…brings a soothing voice and peace of mind to these turbulent times.” – PopMatters

“Rosie Darling is here to declare her place as a recording artist” – FLAUNT

“Rosie Darling is now ready to debut her talents as a solo artist with the release of this beautifully simple yet captivating slice of pop” – Alfitude

At the press conference for All-Out Sundays’ return to live broadcast, Christian Bautista, Rayver Cruz, Glaiza De Castro, and Miguel Tanfelix reacted to the competing noontime show that airs on two free TV channels.

Firstly, Christian highlighted that competition is good for performers as it pushes them to give more effort in their performances. He also pointed out that it’s the audience who wins in the competition between the noontime shows.

“Competition is always good. Kasi, it helps us as well. As performers kasi, mas gumagaling, mas nagbibigay ng effort a.k.a mas hinihingal. Also, parang pressure and competition combined. You know kung sino panalo jan, it’s really our audience. Kasi they get a good show,” said Christian.

Rayver agreed and said that they are happy with the competing noontime show airing on two channels. He also noted that he doesn’t feel any pressure. Instead, they feel excited about their live broadcast return.

We’re happy for them. We’re happy for us. It’s a friendly competition. Na at the same time, nakakatulong yung para lumabas yung bawat ganda ng bawat show. Lalo na for us. Kaya excited na kami, said Rayver.

Glaiza, on the other hand, highlighted that it is necessary for them to feel nervous because they use that to improve their performances.

“Hindi naman mawawala yung kaba, kasi sa lahat ng performers meron yun eh at pagkanawala yun, parang I think there’s something wrong. Kasi yun din yung energy na ginagamit namin para lalo pang husayan,” said Glaiza.

Finally, Miguel agreed with Glaiza. However, he highlighted that they make it a point to enjoy their performances on stage, despite the pressure.

“For me siguro di naman talaga mawawala yung pressure, sa lahat ng gagawin mo professionally or sa buhay mo. Parang may pressure talaga. Masasabi ko lang jan siguro kaya #AOSnumber1 tayo, parang ginagawa namin yun para sa sarili namin. Ine-enjoy namin yung bawat segundo, bawat moment namin sa stage,” said Miguel.

In celebration of their first anniversary on the air, All-Out Sundays return to live broadcast this January 31, 2020. AOS will also kick off GMA7’s month-long Kapuso month celebration for February.

Fresh from the success of the viral hit “Magandang Dilag,” emerging solo artist KVN is ready to introduce his own sound through his new single “Pwede Na Ba,” produced under the new label of ABS-CBN Music called Old School Records (O.S. Records).

KVN’s debut solo single is a tender ballad with a twist of pop vintage. It encapsulates the feeling of a cautious person who desperately wants to make it known how much a certain special someone means to him.

The laidback yet vibrant track is a follow-up to his earlier collaboration with songwriter-producer KIKX, “Kung Iniwan Mo Na,” and will be part of his forthcoming EP under Old School Records.

“We’ve actually written a lot of songs already that will be released in the future, and I’m excited for you guys to hear the way I write,” KVN admitted.

The young artist started his singing career when he crossed paths with KIKX after losing his job as a cruise ship singer due to the pandemic. Aside from being featured in “Magandang Dilag” and his solo music releases, he also sang the 2020 Miss Universe Philippines track “Kalawakan.”

KVN’s “Pwede Na Ba” is the maiden offering of the newly-launched Old School Records, which aims to produce nostalgic music of the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s era with a modern twist in collaboration with today’s hit producers and up-and-coming artists.

“Old School Records is my new venture with ABS-CBN Music,” KIKX previously revealed. “It’s scary but that’s how we grow so I’ll try to broaden my business as a musician through this.”

Aiko and Ogie both gave fiery answers to controversial questions. However, in the middle part of the game, Aiko took the chance to hark back to Ogie’s past.

With this, she asked Ogie to name one male celebrity with whom he had an intimate relationship in the past.

The talent manager then clarified if he should name a woman, but Aiko said a man’s name must come out instead.

“Papangalanan ko? Si… nagsisimula sa capital letter,” Ogie said.

From then, it is clear that the comedian is hesitant to drop a name until he decided to opt for the dare.

He wants to protect the actor’s name and clarified that they did not have a very intimate relationship.

Aiko then quipped, “Ano yun nagtikiman lang?”

The comedian then replied, “Ang bastos mo Aiko!”

Ogie refused to name the actor because he wants to preserve their friendship. Likewise, he believes that they are older now, and that happened a long time ago.

He was then forced to do the dare by Aiko just to keep the name of the actor.

Despite being openly gay, Ogie is married to his wife Georgette and is blessed with four lovely daughters.
